This kind of roof was first seen in the Gen 1 SLK way back in 1997. The SL55 gets a hardtop metal roof which folds in at the touch of a button transforming it from a coupe to a roadster within seconds. Look at the car from the rear and you see those mean looking quad exhausts. The prominent ‘V8 Kompressor’ badge on the front fenders tell you loud and clear that this car is different. The vents on the bonnet looks like claws of a wild cat and character to the styling. Looks wise it is very similar to the regular SL Roadsters but with a few additions like the AMG body kit complete side skirts and spoilers.

The car I drove was a 2003 SL55 AMG (code: R230). For the less informed SL stands for Sport Leicht or Sport Light. The SL has been in production since 1954 and the legendary 300 SL was the first to get the ‘SL’ badging. A very very special car immensely close to my heart. The car I am talking about is non other than the Mercedes SL55 AMG. Little did I know that a few months later, I would be driving the very same car at the same place. It was way back in the second half of 2003 when I first caught sight of this magnificent machine on a pleasant weekend night at Worli Seaface Mumbai. You may end up driving many more exotic machinery later but the memory of when you took to the wheel of THAT particular car for the first time is etched in your mind forever. It is always a very special moment for a car enthusiast when he or she gets to drive a powerful sportscar or supercar for the very first time.
